Commentary

October 01, 2014

Most of us would love to get the IRS to go to church -- but not to censor what's being said there! Hello, I'm Tony Perkins with the Family Research Council in Washington. Now the IRS's culprits are pulpits! Earlier this year, the Freedom From Religion Foundation complained that the IRS wasn't cracking down enough on pastors' free speech. And to prove it, they sued. Now, more worried about a court battle than the church's constitutional rights, the IRS promised to monitor more closely. Never mind that churches have the freedom to preach the truth on the issues. And never mind that not a single church has ever lost its tax exempt status for doing so -- these extremists believe the government, not pastors, should decide what's said in the pulpit. "Every American," said Alliance Defending Freedom, "should fear an IRS that uses its vast power to target, threaten, and punish political opponents." Besides, if the IRS can't be trusted with emails, how can it be trusted to protect church's rights?
